The Nigerian Army, in conjunction with other security agencies, stormed the stronghold of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), at Lilu Forest in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The operation was conducted by men of the Nigerian Army, operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS), and men of the Nigerian Navy and Air Force in the early hours of Monday, January 17, 2022.
This was revealed to the public through a press statement released by the Nigerian Army Public Relations Officer, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
According to the statement, many militants were neutralized during gunbattles with security agents.
After dislodging the dissidents from their fortress, the dogged troops recovered 10 pump-action shotguns, two locally fabricated guns, one revolver pistol, rounds of 7.62 mm special, live cartridges, machetes, and IPOB flags.
Other items recovered are mobile phones, laptops amongst other dangerous weapons. In recent times, the South-East geo-political zone has been a warzone for security agents and gunmen. The security agencies have accused IPOB and ESN of sponsoring the violence in the region.
