The name hippopotamus means river horse as derived from other greek words. The Hippo Sanctuary is a unique community-based project, raised to protect and preserve the wildlife and the environment of a 40km stretch along the Black Volta River in the Upper West Region.
The river is home to one of the two remaining hippopotamus populations in Ghana and was created into a Sanctuary by local chiefs in 1999 for the general public and foreign tourists to visit when necessary.
Since its establishment, the project has had marked success in providing Ghanian and International tourists with a unique and unusual eco-travel experience at the northern corner of the country.

One of such things is the Gwollu Defence Wall built for protection and has become one of the many remaining scars of the slave trade.
The Gwollu Defence Wall was built in the 19th century by Gwollu Koro Limann, as a defense against slave traders for the local residents of the town of Gwollu of that time near the Burkina Faso-Mali border.
Gwollu is 70 kilometers north of Wa, in the Upper West Region of Ghana and it is a community that is largely visited by tourists all year round.
