The government of Ghana has called on telecommunication networks to initiate processes in order to help patrons of their networks register sim cards using the National ID Cards, the Ghana Card.
Since the information was passed by the vice president of the country, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Ministry of Communication, Ghana has taken steps to make sure the directive is obeyed. The ministry gave these telcos up to the end of September 2021, to get the grounds running.
As the grace period has finally elapsed, telcos have begun the registration and registration process of existing sim cards using a USSD code provided across all networks.

To get started with the process, you must know that, the shortcode for this exercise starting on October 1, 2021, is *404# across all networks.
How Existing Sim Users Can Register Sim Cards With Ghana Card
STAGE 1
- Step 1: Start by dialing *404# on your phone and send just as you make calls with your phone each day.
- Step 2: After the response from step 1, enter your Ghana Card ID number (Enter the ID number including the alphabets GHA but without the hyphens.
- Confirm the Ghana Card Pin from the previous step in this step.
- Enter your surname here in this step.
- Enter your first name or names as appearing on the Ghana Card here in this step.
- Enter your date of birth at this step from the response of the previous step in the form of Day (2 digits), month (2 digits), and year (4 digits).
- Select your sex here.
- Confirm details provided through the process.
- Finally, you are at the end of the process; Submit the confirmed details.

NOTE:
If the process is successful, you would receive a confirmation message from your telco to that effect with a unique code for the next stage.
If you are unsuccessful due to the wrong details provided during the process, you will have three attempts to answer some security questions.
If you are unsuccessful due to verification of details by the NIA, you will be informed accordingly to visit NIA for the necessary actions.
STAGE 2:
This stage of the exercise shall be completed when you visit your service provider or their customer care or agents.
