Before his death, Nelson Mandela was married to Graça Machel, Winnie Mandela, and Evelyn Mase. However, none of these marriages was in existence at the time of his death and all have resulted in divorce.
As a father, he has six children in all. Hid children include; Zindziswa Mandela of blessed memory, Zenani Mandela, Madiba Thembekile Mandela, also of blessed memory, Makaziwe Mandela, Makgatho Mandela of blessed memory, and Makaziwe Mandela who has also passed on.
The world lost a great hero and a political icon and South Africa has since not been able to heal from his departure. Nelson Mandela died on December 5, 2013, in Houghton Estate, Johannesburg in South Africa.
Cause of Death Nelson Mandela
Mandela was briefly hospitalized with a respiratory infection in February 2011. This sudden event went on to attract international attention. Though he was treated and discharged, he was re-admitted for a lung infection and gallstone removal in December 2012.
After a successful medical surgery was conducted in early March 2013, his lung infection recurred leading to another hospitalization in Pretoria. In June 2013, the infection worsened and he was readmitted to a Pretoria hospital under intensive care.
The Archbishop of Cape Town Thabo Makgoba visited Mandela at the hospital and prayed with Machel, while Zuma canceled a trip to Mozambique to visit him the following day. Although in an unstable condition, Mandela was discharged from the hospital in September 2013.
Suffering this prolonged respiratory infection, Mandela died on 5 December 2013 at the age of 95, surrounded by his family. The then-president, Jacob Zuma publicly announced his death on television and proclaimed ten days of national mourning.
In his honour, a joint memorial service was held at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium on 10 December 2013, and 8 December as a national day of prayer and reflection. Mandela’s body lay in state from 11 to 13 December at the Union Buildings in Pretoria and a state funeral was held on 15 December in Qunu
